November 2019 marked the 10th anniversary of the murder of Shabtai Kalmanovich, a man whose biography could easily serve as the basis for a thriller. Moreover, multi-part. Kalmanovich served a term in Israel for industrial espionage in favor of the USSR. He was well acquainted with both the highest-ranking officials and the most prominent representatives of the mafia. And the legendary thief in law Vyacheslav Ivankov (Yaponchik) was his close friend. Kalmanovich was friends with the mayor of St. Petersburg, Anatoly Sobchak, and in 1995 his firm Liat-Dixy received several sites in the northern capital for the construction of hypermarkets, as well as a large shopping center.
In February 2000, Anatoly Sobchak, at the invitation of Kalmanovich and his friend Andrei Burlakov, went to the city of Svetlogorsk, Kaliningrad region. Businessmen there were implementing a project to create a free economic trade zone. Suddenly, the former mayor felt bad at the hotel. Andrei and Shabtai immediately came to Sobchak's room. Later, in an interview, Kalmanovich admitted that Sobchak died in his arms.
After 10 years, the murder has not been solved. In 2019, natives of Ingushetia, Ali Belkhoroev and Batyr Tugnoev, were arrested for complicity in the attack. However, after that, the investigation did not come close to the "customers", since the arrested turned out to be "tough nuts". They do not admit guilt and every day it looks more and more that Belkhoroev and Tungoev were not involved in the crime. They just came under the head of the cleansing of the Batalhadzhin clan, to which they once belonged.
